Farmers’ markets set to begin this week
Peterborough’s finds new summer home, Hancock celebrates 20th year, Rindge vendors sell meat

The sun is out, and across the region, green things are springing from the earth. This week marks the opening for many open-air farmers’ markets around the region, where not only local growers, but also craftsmen and producers of animal products can spread their wares for the savvy consumer to browse. And folks in Hancock will celebrate an important milestone.
Change in locations
There will be a change in location this year for one local market, according to Andrea Kirstead, chair of the Peterborough Farmers’ Market.
One of the only year-round farmers’ markets in the area, the market spends its winters in the Peterborough Community Center, and in the summer it used to take up residence in Depot Square. However, parking concerns and the desire for a year-round location led to the decision to hold their outdoor season at the Community Center as well, said Kirstead.
The market will also be hosting some new features this year, including having some baby animals and live music during some weeks, said Kirstead.
The market will still be held outdoors starting tomorrow, outside the community center at 25 Elm St. in Peterborough. The market will be held on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Vendors can register for a space at a cost of $10 for one week, or $80 for the summer season, which goes through Oct. 15.
Peterborough also boasts another outdoor market during the summer months in the Fresh Chicks Market, held on Mondays at the Monadnock Community Hospital. The market opened May 5 this year, and is held Mondays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plants, produce, baked goods, meat, poultry, lobster, cheese, ice cream, fair trade coffee, artisan crafts are among the items available. Produce and so much more
This will be the first week of the Rindge Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market, held during the late spring and summer on Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. through Oct. 9.
“This time of the year, we have plants, seedlings, jams, jellies and craft-type items,” said Kim McCummings, the co-market manager. “We have a vendor that makes birdhouses, and one that makes chairs for your lawns; we have people selling meat. You can find pretty much everything.”
This year the market is adding a second grass-fed meat vendor, McCummings noted, in addition to organic food stock growers.
The Rindge Market is held at the West Rindge common park, located north of the Route 202 and 119 intersection, below JP Stephens. Vendors can reserve a spot for $5 per market. For more information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 491-5482.
This weekend, the Hancock Farmers’ Market will start up its 20th continuous season.
“This is our 20th anniversary, and not many get to boast that, we think,” said Marilyn Chamberlain, the co-market master and farm and field coordinator for the market, which is open Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon in the carriage sheds behind the church in downtown Hancock.
The market costs $7 for a weekly vendors spot or $50 for a seasonal spot through Oct. 11. Chamberlain noted that last year the market had about 15 seasonal vendors and a dozen more who would attend more sporadically, giving the market a nice mix of crafters and food growers. “We have three solid vegetable vendors, so there’s always a bountiful amount,” said Chamberlain.

Other area markets include the Wilton Farmers’ Market, which runs Tuesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Lot 48 Downtown Park on Main Street in the summer months, usually beginning in June, and the Jaffrey Farmers’ Market which is held on Saturday mornings in July through September on Old Sharon Road of Route 202.
