What a night at the Mascenic gymnasium

For years I’ve been wondering when the Mascenic girls basketball team would win a game.

I’ve also wondered if I would have the good fortune of being there to witness it. Well, both happened on Friday with a 41-34 victory over Hillsboro-Deering.

I had at least three people come and ask if it was going to be the night. I was hoping so. It is why I chose to cover the game.

You could feel the energy in the Mascenic gymnasium. It’s been a long time since I have seen that kind of excitement for a girls basketball game. And I was just the local sports guy covering the game. I can only imagine what it was like for the players and coaches.

First-year coach Wiley Billings was almost at a loss for words. He did tell me that it was one of the biggest sports moments he has ever been a part of, and that is saying a lot.

You really had to be there to appreciate the moment and I’m just glad to have spent my Friday night in New Ipswich.

A shout out to all running enthusiasts

I know that with the start of a new year, many people — myself included — use the fresh start as a launching point to getting back into shape. Well, there is no better way to kick off 2013 than with a nice run.

On New Year’s Day, the 35th annual Souhegan Lions Chip Chase 5K will be held in Temple. I don’t have the particulars yet, but I will be putting it in a future edition. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

Not a bad start to the season

I knew Conant senior Katie Tonyai was going to have a good indoor track season. At least I had a feeling she would. And on Saturday, Tonyai proved my hunch correct.

She is one of the best sprinters I have had the pleasure of covering and she continues to impress.

Tonyai won the 55-meter dash by a half a second and the 300-meter by almost a full second. But not only did she grab a pair of victories, the times she ran qualified her for the Division II Championships.

Calling all alumni swimmers

I have seen my fair share of alumni basketball games, but I have yet to see the format used for a swim meet.

But on Dec. 30, Conant will be holding its annual alumni meet at the Clark Memorial Pool in Winchendon, Mass. Warm-ups begin at 10 a.m. with the meet scheduled to kick off at 10:30.

Tough night from the line

The Wilton-Lyndeborough girls basketball team picked up its third win of the season on Friday with a 34-28 victory at Epping. But it was a lot closer than it would have been if the Warriors shot better from the line. WLC made just 10 of its 26 free throw attempts and was only 4-of-11 in the fourth quarter.
