New Ipswich hires new town administrator

NEW IPSWICH — The town has settled on a new Town Administrator. The Select Board offered the position to their first choice candidate Tuesday, and the candidate accepted the position. The town has not yet released the name of the candidate, pending final background checks by the town.

The town has been without a town administrator since early February. The previous administrator, Marie Knowlton, left to retire following the town’s deliberative session on Feb. 5. The town launched a search at the end of December in anticipation of Knowlton’s leaving. The Select Board gathered resumes and began to interview candidates throughout the month of February.

The Select Board made a final list of candidates and voted to offer the position to their first choice last week. In a closed executive session Tuesday, the woman accepted the job offer, according to Select Board Chair George Lawrence . Lawrence confirmed in an interview Wednesday that the candidate selected has experience as a town administrator, and currently serves in that capacity part-time in a New Hampshire town. The salary for a town administrator in New Ipswich is approximately $50,000 per year, plus benefits.

The Select Board’s chosen candidate also has experience as a Select Board member and currently serves as chair of the Select Board in her home town, said Lawrence.

All of the final candidates considered by the board had experience as a town administrator, Lawrence noted. The board’s final choice was based on overall experience and the best fit for the town in terms of personality, he said.

“She portrayed good energy, and seemed to be able to have a good rapport with the people that work within the town,” said Lawrence of the new hire.

The town’s new administrator will have to give notice to her current employer. Because she is currently working in that position part-time, she will be able to begin at the New Ipswich Town office in a limited capacity as soon as she clears the town’s required background check. Following that, she will begin full-time in mid-March, said Lawrence.

The Select Board will meet again Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the town offices.
