Race organizer Erin Lyons has announced she’s shutting down the Monadnock Challenge Sprint Triathlon, ending one of the region’s marquee sporting events.
The inaugural Monadnock Challenge Sprint triathlon was first held in August 2009, and it regularly attracted well over 100 competitors to its race, which featured a 0.4-mile swim in Cunningham Pond, a 15.8-mile bike race and a 3.1-mile run. The event was not held in 2011.
Money raised from the event has gone to the Support4Sports Fund, a program started by Lyons that provides an opportunity – through “sports-ships” – to children, adults, sports teams and others, in local communities who do not have the resources to pursue opportunities in their desired fields of recreation.
According a press release, lack of interest or support was not the issue. “I expect I’ll be somewhat lost without this event and will miss the excitement. I’d just be starting to organize in another couple of weeks, that’s why I needed to decide now.
“It wasn’t an easy decision, but I know it’s the right one. Even with all the community support, my great crew of volunteers and donors, it’s time for me to do something else,” added Lyons, who has been the manager of Performance Health and Fitness gym in Peterborough since 2005. “Everything I hoped for with this event came to be. I wanted to create a challenging but accessible event that would attract first-timers as well as seasoned athletes. The races were magical; success was measured in so many different ways. Some just wanted to finish, while others were pushing for faster times. The volunteers worked for the athletes’ safety and comfort. It was this wonderful coming together. As a community we made Peterborough a triathlon destination for a time. I’m proud of and grateful for what we accomplished together.
