ConVal High School paraprofessional facing sex charges resigns
John Vargas-Cifrino, 35, of Harrisville, who was recently indicted by a Cheshire County Grand Jury on sexual assault charges, resigned as a full-time paraprofessional at ConVal High School in August, according to ConVal’s Director of Human Resources Tim Markley.
Markley said Monday that Vargas-Cifrino resigned on Aug. 15, just a few days after ConVal High School placed Vargas-Cifrino on unpaid leave. Markley added that ConVal High School has since hired Bill Leahy as a full-time paraprofessional to replace Vargas-Cifrino.
Vargas-Cifrino’s duties included assisting teachers with children who have behavioral challenges, according to Supt. Richard Bergeron.
Vargas-Cifrino is charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted aggravated felonious sexual assault of a girl he knew between the ages of 13 and 16, according to Superior Court indictments dated Oct. 28.
In addition to his job at ConVal, Vargas-Cifrino had worked part-time as a Rindge police officer for the last 11 years, but he resigned from the force on Aug. 5.
A trial in the case has been scheduled for July 2013.
