Town doesn’t  need a chain store

To the editor:

A tacky store like Dollar General does not belong in the center of a small town’s historic district. It belongs in a highway strip mall far away from the center of any town.

Retail stores in the center of any New England town should comply with the zoning laws that are in place to protect property values, local retailers, and the town’s historic district. There should be no exception and the area really doesn’t need another dollar store.

If the property is adequately advertised, there eventually will be a developer with a vision and the funding to purchase and develop the school property. A family restaurant and a few retail shops would be nice. The small, high quality mom and pop shops and restaurants in the Monadnock region towns are way better than the boxes and chains. They are also an integral part of New England’s charm.
