• Female Athlete: Sophie LeVert, WLC girls soccer

LeVert was the highest point-scorer on the season’s best girls team. She used her speed, smarts and tenacity to control the sidelines and the offensive zone for WLC all season long. A playmaker equally at home dishing out assists, netting tough-angle shots and dribbling through traffic, LeVert was crucial to the success of both her Warrior teammates and the team as a whole.

It was a wild night in Wilton as the WLC Warriors girls soccer team defeated the Lisbon Panthers 3-2 in double overtime to advance to the second round of the DIV playoffs. There was frost on the field when the sun rose in Wilton that morning; perhaps that was why the Warriors came out cold to open the game.

It was a back-and-forth first period, with neither team able to gain much momentum. Each team’s midfield stood strong, rejecting every sortie into their defensive end. Eventually, the teams began breaking through and getting some chances on goal; midway through the first, Lisbon’s Kolonie Hudson was able to corral a loose ball in the box and chip a ball over the head of WLC keeper Cori Balam. There was nothing Balam could do as the shot arced high over her head and settled down behind her in the net, 1-0 Lisbon.

After a foul just outside the Lisbon box, go-to free kicker Jenna Bragdon lined up a direct kick and rifled it just over the crossbar, missing a chance to tie up the game. This was one of the closest first half scoring chances for the Warriors, and they could muster no more offense before heading into halftime down 1-0.

The Warriors came out fired up in the second half, but their energy was quickly stifled when the Panthers scored early in the second and went up 2-0. The game grew increasingly chippy, as Lisbon was not used to the more physical style of soccer played down in Southern New Hampshire. More and more penalties were called, and midway through the second half, Jenna Bragdon had a second chance to score, this time on a penalty kick. She set the ball, waited for the whistle and rocketed it – straight into the Lisbon goalie’s chest for the save. Another missed opportunity.

This was a pivotal moment for the Warriors, who could have hung their heads down 2-0 with less than a quarter of the game remaining. But they simply would not quit. Leading point-scorer Sophie Levert, who was relentless all game pushing the ball toward the Lisbon net, finally got a chance in the open as she took a long pass at midfield with room to run. She streaked down the right sideline with the ball in her possession, teammate Ally Schwab on the other side of the field and only two defenders back with them. Levert crossed the ball to Schwab, got a cross back and tucked it in the net behind the Lisbon goalie, who was charging out almost to the right edge of the box.

With only about five minutes remaining in the game, WLC earned yet another penalty kick. This time, Coach Bill Draper opted to use goalie-turned-defender Tesa Simpson on the kick instead of Bragdon. Simpson lined up the kick, her teammates looking on in agony, and shot it just over the keeper’s outstretched hands – but it went inches over the crossbar, no good. The visiting Lisbon crowd erupted in excitement, but that excitement quickly turned to bewilderment and anger as the referee rushed out and told Simpson to place the ball and kick it again. She hadn’t waited for the whistle before taking her shot, and thus it was like it never happened. Simpson made good on her second chance and tied the game at 2-2.

The rest of the game was played in that breathless limbo where the crowd hangs silently on every bounce of the ball. WLC, now with some offensive momentum, started sending shots at the net in an effort to end the game in regulation. They very nearly did; one shot from near midfield was headed by a Lisbon defender in the box, but she only got a tiny piece of the ball, and it went straight back toward the goal. Lisbon’s keeper reacted lightning-quick and got a fingertip on the ball, deflecting it off the crossbar and out of play. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie.

Kolonie Hudson had another crack at scoring in overtime but missed wide right, and WLC had a shot go off the crossbar, but neither team could score in the first overtime, so they lined up for a second. About a minute into the second overtime period, Bragdon took a corner kick on the right side and launched it all the way across the goal, where Chelsea Barnes was waiting. She emerged from a crowd of defenders and headed the ball into the goal for the win. Pandemonium.

The Warriors were giddy after the win, but the celebration won’t last long; they now must travel to 3-seed Sunapee on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The Lakers beat the Warriors 8-0 to open the season and 1-0 at the end of the year.
