ConVal is scheduled to stage a recount of Article 1, the school budget of $52,583,177 that failed by four votes last Tuesday, 1,625 to 1,621.

The recount is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, School District moderator Bob Edwards said. If the recount fails to determine a majority of “yes” votes, ConVal is facing a default budget of $51,065,984, or $1,517,193 less.

Edwards is responsible for overseeing the recount, he confirmed on Saturday. The School District took possession of all the ConVal warrant ballots following the election, Edwards said, and that he’s reached out to all nine Town Clerks in the District to recruit ballot counters for a recount scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Edwards is hoping to get experienced counters representing all towns to aid in a transparent and accurate count, he said, and is working to ensure that every relevant New Hampshire statute is followed in the process.

Ballot counters must be voters from the District, Edwards said.

It’s been more than five years or so since the School District has conducted a recount, Edwards said. Ledger-Transcript records indicate that a bond recount in 2012 led to its passage.

The recount is scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the ConVal High School gym. Members of the public can observe the recount while following COVID-19 safety protocols.
