The Peterborough Car Wash reopened this week with a brand new machine that includes a number of features previously unavailable, almost three months after an accident damaged the existing machine beyond repair.

Owner Steve McDonough said the closure, which came at the busiest time of the year for the car wash, began on Dec. 30 when a customer inadvertently started into the washing bay before it was ready, causing damage to the main frame, breaking off three of the five brushes and ruining the feed lines.

McDonough said the old setup was removed on Feb. 1 and the installation of the new machine, a Mark VII Choice Wash, began on Feb. 8. He said it took about two weeks worth of time to install and at the end of the last week McDonough ran some tests in anticipation of this week’s opening.

“The traffic by here has been constant,” McDonough said, as people have been curious at when it will reopen.

Just prior to the accident, McDonough said he had some work done to tune up the machine for the busy season, which traditionally spans from January through March. The old machine, which was installed in 2012, was getting on in years, but was at least a few years away from being replaced.

“It depended on how it performed over this next year, but probably in the next couple years,” he said, adding the typical life span is 10 to 12 years. “But I would have done it in the fall when the weather is nicer and it’s a little quieter.”

The cost of the machine and installation, McDonough said the price tag was around $200,000. The Mark VII provides the option for either a touch free or soft touch wash, while the old machine did not have the touch free choice. It has wheel brushes that will scrub a car’s rims and a hot wax option.

“This new machine just cleans so much better,” McDonough said.

McDonough added three new vacuums to bring the total to five and the bill acceptor has been replaced.

McDonough said there will be an attendant on site from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but it will now remain open 24 hours a day after closing at 10 p.m. previously.

“Now we’re going to let it run. You can come at five in the morning or one in the morning,” McDonough said.

He said there are about 18,000 car washes received each year in Peterborough.

The base price of $9 will remain the same, while other options can be had for $12, $15 or $18.

While waiting for the machine to be built, McDonough said they did a deep cleaning and painted the interior. Some of the cracking in the brick work was also repaired.

McDonough said loyalty cards for the Peterborough Car Wash previously purchased will be honored. He said during the closure there were about 100 loyalty card holders that used another one of his locations, the Yellow Dog Car Wash in Milford.
