A Rindge man was arrested earlier this month and charged with arson and criminal threatening, after allegedly setting fire to a vehicle on May 3.

Temple-Greenville police arrested Matthew Labonte, 38, of Rindge, at the scene of the incident, on Old Peterborough Road in Temple, police Chief Jim McTague said Tuesday. Labonte allegedly set fire to and destroyed a jeep on the property and threatened the homeowner, McTague said.

The case is being prosecuted by the Hillsborough County Attorney’s office. Hillsborough County Attorney Michael Conlon said Monday that the complaints filed at the Hillsborough Superior Court in Nashua against Labonte allege that he knowingly started a fire, unlawfully damaging a Jeep Grand Cherokee that did not belong to him, causing damage in excess of $1,000.

The criminal threatening complaint alleges that Labonte also threatened to kill a resident of the home “with a purpose to terrorize the victim,” according to Conlon.

The arson charge is a class B felony, punishable by up to potentially three and a half to seven years in prison, and the criminal threatening charge is a class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in prison.

Labonte was held in preventative detention after his arrest, and continued to be held following his May 4 bail hearing, according to Conlon. He is next scheduled to appear in court for a dispositional hearing on July 1 at the Hillsborough Superior Court in Nashua.
