Senior housing site needs inspection

To the editor:

As a Jaffrey Selectman, I decided recently not to second Selectman Frank Sterling’s motion to endorse the Southwest Community Service’s plan to create elderly housing on the site of the St. Patrick School parking lot. This was misinterpreted by many as a vote against senior housing. I can assure you that I am very much in favor of bringing senior housing to Jaffrey!

However, I am concerned about the proposed site. More than a few people who have lived in town much longer that I have, clearly remember that land being filled with questionable material. Until we know what is under this parking lot and that it is safe for the community, I can’t support this plan.

As Selectman, I also believe that it is my responsibility to ensure that the Town incurs no liability for anything found in the ground that could cause an environmental concern or that would adversely affect the integrity of what will be built on that site. As a result of these concerns, the soil under the site is going to be bore tested to determine its quality. If it is determined that the site is viable for such a building plan, and that the town will incur no liability regarding what is under the parking lot, then I will support Southwest Community Service’s plan.

I am still humbled by and grateful for the opportunity you gave me by electing me as your Selectman. I remain committed to this job and am honored to serve the Jaffrey community. Please feel free to contact me with your concerns, and I will do my best to address these.
