The Wilton Select Board settled a long-ambigious parking situation by essentially ceding the spots to a landowner.

Earlier this summer, the Select Board had asserted that spots located in front of the so-called “yellow block” on Main Street belonged to the town, contacting the owner of the property, Joan Lemire, to ask her to take down signs that indicated parking in that area was for tenants only. The town did so on belief that the town had previously paved those spots during the last major Main Street project, arguing that would only have been done to town property. However, Lemire attended the board’s Monday meeting, arguing that her deed seemed to show that she did indeed own the spots.

Neither side was able to provide conclusive surveys showing the exact deliniation of where the town line ended and Lemire’s property began, and after some discussion, the board agreed it was not prepared at this point to pay for a survey to settle the issue.

The board agreed unanimously that at the present time, it would not contest Lemire’s stance of ownership over the spaces, and that moving forward, any maintanence of the spaces, such as line painting or plowing, would not be handled by the town and be Lemire’s responsibility. Lemire agreed to those stipulations.
