Large-format photo exhibit opens Wednesday

An opportunity to see a large-format photography exhibit by Paul Wainwright of Atkinson opens Wednesday in the Thoreau Gallery at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge.

Wainwright, an award-winning photographer, will give a presentation of his work at 4:30 p.m. following an exhibit reception. Beginning at 3 p.m., the event is open free to the public.

The exhibit continues through Jan. 15. For more information, Thoreau Gallery director Lorettann Gascard is available at 899-4201 or gascardld@franklinpierce.edu.

The exhibit titled “Contemplative Nexus in the Photography of Paul Wainwright” explores the interplay of images from his book “A Space for Faith; The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England” and images from his Pendulum Project.

Wainwright works with 4-by-5-foot sheet film and silver gelatin paper, creating clarity and detail.

Wainwright converted his barn into a photography studio and then constructed a 40-pound piece of steel suspended by a steel cable as a pendulum.

“The current series of photographs,” he says, “has been in the planning and construction stage for about the past three years. The idea is the same as my 1967 work, but the technique is much more refined.”
