Gourlay to lead  communications at MacDowell

The MacDowell Colony, the nation’s first artist residency program, has named Jonathan Gourlay its new communications manager. The Peterborough resident will be responsible for advancing the Colony’s mission to media outlets and a growing constituency of artists, patrons, and followers. He will also lead a new digital media strategy to bring the artist experience to a national public.

Gourlay comes to MacDowell after working as the news and site editor for, an IT website based in Newton, Mass., where he managed editorial production, working on topics such as Web content management and collaboration technology.

“The MacDowell Colony is a treasure trove of stories and I’m looking forward to helping tell those stories to promote its cause of providing artists with the freedom they need to create,” Gourlay said. “I’m also hoping to bring my recent experience covering a host of content management topics to bear as The MacDowell Colony revamps its website and looks to communicate its mission clearly to the wider world.”

Gourlay has more than 25 years of experience writing and editing for various industry and consumer media outlets. He spent seven years managing content production for and Desktop Engineering magazine in Dublin. He was also news editor at the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript in Peterborough.
