Clarification about heritage district

To the editor:

The Greenfield Heritage District article in the March 27 edition of your paper was mostly accurate, but a bit misleading, and as a member of the Greenfield Planning Board, I would just like to clarify a few items.

The discussion Monday night was to note topics to address in the next year. A few of us on the board made statements regarding the Heritage District, but any real debate on the matter will take place at future public meeting(s). I would encourage residents to attend the meetings.

During the conversation, Paul Renaud voiced his opposition to the Heritage District Ordinance and noted the overwhelming defeat by the voters. I doubt anyone would even consider reintroducing the proposed ordinance. However, I also know that all board members are open to an open exchange of new ideas in the best interest of the town. I expect that we will have a thorough discussion on the matter — preferably with a large participation of the public — before anything is brought back to voters.

I don’t necessarily believe that better communication with the townspeople would have significantly changed the outcome of the Heritage District Ordinance vote. However, more and earlier assistance of residents will make it easier for us to plan for the wishes of the citizens and greatest benefits to the town of Greenfield.
