Hoops for Steve raises $3,000

The 6th annual Hoops for Steve basketball fund-raiser generated almost $3,000 for the Stephen Curtis Record Scholarship Fund.

The event was held on March 23, which would have been Record’s 22nd birthday, and once again saw free throw shooting enthusiasts fill Conant’s Pratt Auditorium in honor of Record’s memory. Record, a three-sport athlete at Conant, died in an automobile accident on Dec. 27, 2007 at the age of 16.

The first Hoops for Steve was held just three months after his passing and has been a mainstay in the fundraising effort. And along with the $1,560 raised on Feb. 5 during the Conant and Mascenic varsity basketball double header, the event stayed in line with the amount raised in the previous five years. In the last six years, Hoops for Steve has raised almost $25,000 for the scholarship fund.

Last year, a team made up of Record’s former teammates took on a contingency from the Franklin Pierce University men’s basketball team.

JP Record, Record’s little brother who shares the same birthday, once again led the fundraising effort with an event-high $730.

David Springfield hit all 21 of his free throws, the only one to do so, to finish first in the adult men’s category. Brooke Springfield won the adult female division, while Megan Wheeler captured the middle school girls title. Paul Murphy and Drew Marro tied for the top spot for middle school boys. Peyton Springfield and Regan Despres finished first in the grade school divisions.

After the event, the scholarship fund total now sits around $85,000. Every June, two $2,500 scholarships are given to a graduating male and female from Conant. A total of $20,00 in scholarships has been given out.

The Stephen Record Memorial Golf Tournament will be held May 25, the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
