Water aerobics is an exercise that just about anyone can do no matter their physical condition or fitness, making it an ideal way for the elderly, people with impaired mobility or those recovering from injury to work the muscles, explained Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation’s Water Fitness Instructor Heather Vanderpool. And because water fitness at the Greenfield facility is taught in a class, its members get the support and encouragement of a group of fellow exercisers.

While those who use the water’s buoyancy to assist them with balance and for a low-impact workout, the added resistance of the water can create a tougher workout for those who are looking for one, Vanderpool noted.

“Water exercise and swimming itself is good for cross-training,” she said. “It uses larger muscle groups than bicycling or running, for example.”
