Town hires deputy town clerk to train

JAFFREY — The town has hired a part-time deputy town clerk, who will assume the full-time responsibilities of town clerk after longtime municipal employee Maria Chamberlain says goodbye to Jaffrey this fall.

Chamberlain, Jaffrey’s town clerk for the past 25 years, appointed Kelly Rowlands of Jaffrey to the temporary position of deputy town clerk recently, after a small committee composed of town employees, including Chamberlain, vetted approximately 20 applicants.

At a June 24 Select Board meeting, the board confirmed Chamberlain’s appointment of Rowlands, marking the start of a transition period for the town. When Rowlands is promoted to town clerk later this year, the part-time deputy town clerk position will be eliminated, said Town Manager Dave Caron in a recent interview with the Ledger-Transcript.

At Town Meeting next March, voters will elect a new town clerk for a three-year term.

When asked what the increased cost to the town will be with the addition of the temporary part-time deputy town clerk position, Caron said it would be dependent upon when Chamberlain works her last day.

Chamberlain said last week that she has not chosen a departure date, but she will likely serve the town through September.

“I want to give my replacement plenty of training,” Chamberlain said. “It takes a lot of time to get your feet wet.”

After working for Jaffrey for more than two decades, Chamberlain said it’s the residents and the people she interacts with on a regular basis that she will miss the most.

“What’s next is relocating and starting over,” Chamberlain said, adding that she plans to move South to be closer to her parents and for the better weather.

Rowlands, who currently works for TD Bank in Jaffrey, will be an asset to the town offices, Caron said, adding that she has a solid background in financial transactions and accounting.
