JAFFREY — An explosion in a Jaffrey man’s workshop left him with minor injuries Thursday.

Lee Sawyer of 391 Nutting Rd. in Jaffrey was sharpening an ax in his barn, where he has a workshop, around noon Thursday when an spark from the grinder caught in a box of gunpowder stored in the shop, Sawyer said in an interview Friday. The box exploded, about three feet from where he was standing, Sawyer said.

The explosion left him with first-degree burns on his arms and face. There was also damage to the workshop, with two of the three windows and the workshop door sustaining damage, Sawyer said.

“My burns were first-degree, which is as easy as you can get off, when it comes to burns,” said Sawyer. “You could have got the same thing at the beach, if you got a good sunburn, only the windows would be in better shape.”
