‘Northern Borders’ film screening at library Monday
The Peterborough Town Library will present the Monadnock premiere of Vermont director Jay Craven’s latest film, “Northern Borders,” at the Peterborough Community Theater on Monday at 7 p.m.
Craven will host the film and lead a post-film discussion. A reception, catered by Roy’s Market, will be held at the library, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Howard Frank Moser, award-winning author of “Northern Borders,” will be present.
The film, starring Genevieve Bujold and Bruce Dern, tells the story of 10-year old Austen Kittredge, who is sent to live on his grandparents’ farm in northern Vermont, where he has interesting adventures and uncovers long-simmering family feuds.
It’s 1956 and Austen experiences a rural Vermont full of eccentric people including his stubborn grandparents, whose thorny marriage is known locally as the 40 Years War. A humorous and sometimes startling coming-of-age story, “Northern Borders” evokes Vermont’s wildness, physical beauty and aura of enchantment.
The film was produced as the result of a unique partnership between Jay Craven’s nonprofit Kingdom County Productions and Marlboro College, where Craven is professor of film. It was produced through the collaboration of 20 young filmmaking professionals and 34 students from Marlboro and other area colleges, and was filmed in Windham County, Vt. and Cheshire County.
Craven’s Vermont films, based upon the writings of Howard Frank Mosher, have played in 53 countries as well as throughout the U.S. and Canada, and have been termed “New England westerns” for their larger-than-life characters, archetypal themes involving vanishing ways of life, and for their wild and rough-hewn natural settings.
Tickets for the reception and the film are $25 per person, and proceeds will go towards paying the film’s completion costs and to support film studies at Marlboro College. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the library’s programming budget.
Tickets are available at the library and at the Toadstool.
Tickets for the screening alone $12 for adult, $10 for senior, and $6 for youth, available at the theater.
Both the library and Kingdom County Productions are most grateful to the Peterborough Community Theater for providing the venue without charge, and to Roy’s Market for donating their catering services.
