ConVal Boys Soccer

CV boys  focus on deep run

Not even a mid-season coaching change could slow down the Cougars this year; after head coach and athletic director Jon Hall resigned suddenly amid an internal funding-related investigation, ConVal went 5-1-1 under interim head coach Scott Daniels. The Cougars only allowed three goals in that stretch, with the only ConVal loss coming against eventual top seed Hollis-Brookline, 1-0.

“We feel good about where we are right now in terms of our play,” Daniels said. “We were able to put together some quality games over the past month or so and get the results that we needed to earn a home playoff game.”

ConVal hosts Trinity today at 3 p.m. Trinity had an up-and-down 6-8-2 season and landed the tenth seed.

The Cougars are lead by senior scoring machine Austin Wheeler, who is never shy about shooting. Junior speedster Ian Szep complements him nicely from the wing; if he puts a pass on Wheeler’s foot, it’s probably going in the net. Senior captain Campbell French is the team’s heart and soul, and junior defender Stephen Twitchell is the bane of forwards across the division. Senior keeper Liam McNally has had a solid season, especially down the stretch.

“This team has believed and been focused on making the playoffs and having a long run since they started work in August,” Daniels said. “It would mean a lot to some of the older members of the team, as the last two seasons have ended with home playoff losses. Personally, I have always believed that we were a good team and that we could make a deep playoff run if we played to our strengths.”
