Police warn of scam tied to lottery

While a wide range of mail and Internet scams are regularly being reported to local police, Greenfield Chief Brian Giammarino says one he saw this week attracted his attention.

A resident brought in a very realistic looking check for $3,500 that he’d received in the mail from a Canadian company, along with a letter saying he had won a lottery and to collect money he would only have to pay the taxes due on the winnings.

Giammarino said the documents looked quite authentic, leading him to be concerned that others might be fooled.

“People need to be aware that this is a scam,” Giammarino said.
