Police: Driver  jumped from  moving car

ANTRIM — After attempting to stop a vehicle traveling at night without headlights on, police witnessed the operator exit the moving car through the front passenger’s door and run off into the woods on Clinton Road, according to Police Chief Scott Lester. Police say they have a suspect.

On Sept. 25, Officer Brian Lord was on patrol on Main Street when he saw a tan, 2000 Dodge Neon Sedan without its lights on heading north. The driver ignored the officer’s attempt to pull them over and proceeded to exit the vehicle while it was still in motion. According to police reports, the car was still in gear when the male operator abandoned it and the vehicle continued to travel north and then went off the road into the swamp on the northbound side of Clinton Road.

Lord checked the vehicle and found no other passengers. Since Antrim does not have its own K9 unit, Lord called in Sgt. Nick Hodgen of the Hillsborough Police Department to assist in the search of the man. Lester said Wednesday that the K9 team searched for an hour to an hour and a half, but because of the heavy forest and wet conditions that evening, Hodgen and his K9, Fanto, did not find the operator. Lord described the man in question as having short dark hair, who at the time of the incident was wearing a blue t-shirt, black shorts and tan work boots.

The vehicle sustained minor damage and was later towed to the Peterborough Police Department impound lot, where it was secured pending an application for a search warrant. Lester said a search of the car was conducted Thursday and alcohol was seized during the search. Police are working on an arrest warrant, charging the man with DWI, transportation of alcohol, open container, disobeying an officer and resisting arrest.

An arrest had not yet been made as of press time Wednesday.
