Minnihan named to lead ConVal School District

Greenfield resident new superintendent

Brendan Minnihan, a Greenfield resident who is currently the superintendent of the Sunapee School District, has been selected to be the next ConVal school superintendent, effective July 1.

Minnihan, 46, has been superintendent in Sunapee for the last five years. He has a daughter who attended Greenfield Elementary School and is now at South Meadow School.

Minnihan has a Ph.D in education from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and worked in the Hampstead and Fall Mountain school district before going to Sunapee, a one-town district that has 470 students and two schools — an elementary school and a combined middle and high school.

School Board Chair Butch Estey announced the hiring in a notice to ConVal staff on Wednesday.

“We are very fortunate to be able to have Dr. Minnihan as our new superintendent who brings considerable experience to us from his educational career and statewide involvement. We look forward to continuing our move forward to become a high performing district with him at the helm,” Estey wrote.

“I’m happy and excited,” Minnihan said when contacted by phone Wednesday afternoon. “I certainly care about the district a lot. I’m looking forward to continuing the great things that have been happening. I think ConVal has a lot of interest in being a high performing district. I think that’s very doable at ConVal.”

Minnihan said one of his first tasks will be to get out to events, where he can meet people and listen to their concerns.

“They don’t all come to school board meetings or a football game or a music concert,” he said. “They go to all those things.”

Estey said Minnihan will officially start on July 1, after the contract of the current superintendent, Dick Bergeron, ends.

“We’re very pleased to have him,” Estey said Wednesday about Minnihan. “He’s going to give us a lot of energy. We’re going to have a very busy year, with a lot of issues coming up.”

He said Minnihan has been asked to participate in the hiring process for a principal at South Meadow School.

“I’m sad that Dick Dunning is leaving,” Minnihan said, referring to South Meadow’s principal, who is retiring at the end of the school year. “It’s an important job to fill. I’ve given them a lot of dates when I can be available. I have an important job to do here [at Sunapee] as well.”

I am glad that the committee found what they feel is a competent person to lead the Conval district. I would have liked a fresh face, the other candidate I read was from Many states away. I hope that someone who has been listening to all that has been going on in our district over the last 5-6 years- can be impartial and lead us in the right direction.
