Energy auditor with ties to ConVal to hold free workshop
Ted Stiles, a Peterborough resident, BPI Certified Energy Auditor, and adjunct faculty member of the Harris Center, will lead a free “Button UP NH” weatherization workshop in Keene on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the UCC Church.
Through his position with the Harris Center, he collaborated with Conval’s 9th grade science teachers to help create a curriculum unit designed to bring the abstract concepts of energy sources, thermal energy, flows, heat transfer and heat conservation into tangible life, the practical realm of living in and powering our homes. After experiencing a modified “Button Up” workshop with Stiles, 50 of the 100 students who will eventually complete the unit went with their teachers on separate field trips to a house at Otter Brook Farm in Peterborough where they were guided through a series of hands-on educational stations using energy auditing equipment — infra red cameras and smoke machines. They even participated in a blower door test, guided by Stiles and assisted by volunteers from the Monadnock Energy Resources Initiative. Following the scaled down energy audit, they used their math skills and science knowledge to recommend energy efficiency improvements they would suggest for the building.
On Saturday, attendees can learn how to safely tighten up their homes, and get more information about the Home Performance with Energy Star Program, mandated by the U.S. Department of Energy, the EPA and NH utilities to pay eligible homeowners half the cost of energy efficiency improvements up to $4,000.
