When the ConVal girls volleyball team took the court Thursday in the first playoff game in team history, an observer might have thought their opponent was nothing more than the 9th-seeded Moultonborough Panthers. If you ask the Cougars, though, their biggest enemy on that day was one created by their own success.

“I think the name ‘playoff’ got to us quite a bit, and we were like ‘Oh yeah, we’re in the playoffs,’” senior setter Sarah Clemens said after the game. “It was a little overwhelming.”

Moultonborough, no stranger to post-season action, came out strong and confident, seemingly dropping every ball into the open spaces on ConVal’s side of the net. They took the first game 25-16, dominated in the second game for a 25-9 win and then put the Cougars away 25-14 to win the match.

Coach Jenn Merrill was surprised that her team was eliminated in such a fashion after a regular season that ended with an 11-5 record, the best in program history.

“I think the nerves got to them,” Merrill said. “I tried to keep telling them ‘It’s just a regular game – don’t worry about what it means to win or lose. It’s a regular game. We’ve been practicing really well this last week or so, we’ve been playing really well together, we just need to go out there and play volleyball.’ It’s too bad, because we didn’t show our best tonight. I know and they know that they could have played better.”

The Cougars were disappointed with their early exit, but Clemens recognized the strides her team made to get to that point.

“I would have much rather won,” Clemens said, “but, I mean, we won our senior game, and we won 11 games this year which is insane. It definitely makes up for it. It would have been nice to win the last game. But it is playoffs – you either win or you lose.”
