Letter: Vote ‘Yes’ on Article 6

To the editor:

Fellow ConVal voters, please vote “Yes” on Article 6, which would change our Articles of Agreement to require a 2/3 majority of district voters to close a school.

Back in December, the School Board voted 7-to-3 to accept the Model Study Committee’s recommended warrant article. The article as worded then would have codified a procedure for the SAU to follow in order to close a school, with the final authority granted to the School Board and requiring a 2∕ 3 vote of school board members to approve the closing.

There was some opposition to this voiced during the public hearing in January. I don’t recall a single attendee from the public that night who supported the warrant article as written. Regardless of our good intentions as a School Board, the prospects of convincing 2/3 of voters to support the article in that form looked slim.

During the Deliberative Session in February, a citizen amended the article to put the authority to close schools in the voters’ hands instead of the School Board’s hands. Although this wasn’t the original wording of the warrant article, it passed during the Deliberative Session by a 226-to-107 margin. Our School Board listened to the voters, and eight days later after discussion voted 11-to-1 to recommend the article as amended.

Please vote on March 12 and support Article 6, which will allow a closure process that would require an approval by 2∕ 3 of our district voters. We will need every vote to reach the 2∕ 3 required to change our Articles of Agreement, so please mark it on your calendar and make your voice heard.
