SMS’s Curran wins state wrestling title

South Meadow School seventh grader Daniel Curran captured his second straight state wrestling title on Sunday.

Curran won three matches in the 143-pound weight class at Keene High School and improved his in-state record to 23-1 overall. His one loss came on Feb. 17 in the semifinals at the state regionals to Jacob Dow of Newport Middle School when he fell by a score of 4-3.

With his win in the consolation finals, Curran earned the third seed at 143 pounds at the state meet and Dow went on to get the No. 1 position in the weight class.

Curran won 4-1 in the state quarterfinals to set up a rematch with Dow in the semis. And Curran did not allow for history to repeat itself, coming away with a 13-11 victory and a spot in the finals.

In the championship match at 143 pounds, Curran and Brennan French of Hudson went into overtime scoreless before Curran grabbed a 2-0 win and a second straight state championship.

Curran will make his first trip to the New England Championships this weekend in Lowell, Mass. Entering this weekend, Curran is 26-4 overall.

In five regular season tournaments, Curran won his weight class three times with a pair of runner-up finishes. Of his 26 wins, 19 came by pin.

Last year, Curran won the 145-pound weight class in the 5th/6th grade division with three pins at the NH state meet. He finished last season with a perfect 18-0 record and 17 pins.
