JAFFREY — At Wednesday’s Jaffrey-Rindge School Board meeting, the board accepted a letter of resignation from longtime Conant High School music teacher Leonard Holmes, and the board said the school district is still investigating a situation that led to Holmes and Conant High School Principal John Barth being placed on leave in April.

The district has declined to comment on a 1992 investigation by the Jaffrey police of alleged sexual assault 10 years earlier involving a Jaffrey-Rindge student, following which Holmes paid a woman a $5,000 settlement. After that, Holmes was put on permanent probation by the school district, according to police records, but Supt. James O’Neill has said the district has no such information about Holmes on file.

School Board member Jeff Clark-Kevan said at Wednesday night’s meeting that the school district has had an investigation of Holmes and a report that is being reviewed by the district.

“We will be given information at the same time as anyone else,” Clark-Kevan said at the meeting.

In an interview Thursday, O’Neill said he could not confirm whether the investigation is ongoing or closed regarding Holmes’ “personnel issue” — the reason the district said Holmes was put on leave in April, along with Principal Barth.

A substitute music teacher has been filling in for Holmes. Assistant principals at the middle and high schools have been overseeing day-today operations.

With no new information to present Wednesday, Clark-Kevan said the board received a letter of resignation from Holmes, dated May 5, 2014. Without any discussion amongst the board, they accepted Holmes’ resignation and continued onto the next item on the agenda.

“After a number of considerations, I wish to resign my position at Conant High School and retire effective June 30, 2014,” the letter from Holmes reads. “I also would like to continue (at my cost) as a retired participant in the School District’s medical and dental plans.”
