Committee to  select candidates for town manager

Position expected to be filled early this year

JAFFREY — A five-member search committee, which includes town officials and Jaffrey residents, aided by a municipal consulting firm, will begin vetting candidates this month to fill the open Jaffrey town manager position by early 2013.

Applications for the position were due Monday, but town officials said Wednesday they do not yet know how many people have applied for the job. The search committee is expected to meet soon with representatives from Massachusetts Municipal Association — the Brookline, Mass.,-based professional consulting firm hired by the board in November — to review the applications and choose a select few for an initial interview, said Select Board member Don MacIsaac on Wednesday.

Jaffrey’s town manger of five years, Mike Hartman, accepted a job offer as town manager in Stoughton, Mass., in November. He served his last day with the town of Jaffrey on Dec. 14, and Department of Public Works Director Randy Heglin took over as interim town manager on Dec. 17. Heglin will be fulfilling a dual role as DPW director and interim town manager during the duration of the search. He first served as Jaffrey’s interim town manager more than five years ago when the Select Board conducted a search to replace the town manager of 14 years, Jonathan Sistare.

In December, Massachusetts Municipal Association posted an advertisement online and in publications for the Jaffrey town manager position. According to the job advertisement, the salary for the town manager will be $100,000. A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s desired.

Although $100,000 was the advertised annual salary, MacIsaac said Wednesday that the salary will be up for discussion during contract negotiations with whomever town officials choose at the conclusion of the search.

In total, the town will spend approximately $12,000 to $14,000 from its 2012 budget on the search, MacIsaac said.

The Select Board appointed in November a five-member committee, which includes Thomas Rothermel of the town’s Historic District Commission, Town Moderator Marc Tieger, Department of Public Works Director Randy Heglin, Jaffrey Public Library Director Joan Knight and Steve Christian of Red’s of Jaffrey, to assist the board in its search for a new town manager. The Select Board has also procured the services of Massachusetts Municipal Association at that time.
