ConVal’s Hardwick takes first in girls discus
New England Ravens 11U pitcher Patrick Forbes throws no-hitter in win over Nashua
On Friday, the ConVal track team participated in their season opener at Souhegan High School. Four schools participated in the meet, Hollis-Brookline, Souhegan, Pelham and ConVal.
ConVal had several top three finishes in a number of events. Leading the way on the girls team was co-captain Megan Hardwick with a strong first place and state qualifier in the girls discus at 99’ 7”. Not far behind, Selina Baldwin had 81’ 1” in the same event and a state qualifier. Baldwin also had a state qualifier in the javelin and placed second at 88’ 0”.
Coming into her second year, Grace Bowman looked very good in the 200m dash with a second place at 29.31 seconds. Lara Mathias begin her campaign in the 300m hurdles with third place at 54.16 seconds, well on her way to her goal for a sub-50 this season. Bailey Guinn had a good start in the girls long jump at 13’4’25” and third place. New to the team Liz Walko placed third in the girls 100m dash at 13.82 seconds. Kristy Pratt placed 3rd in the 400m dash at 69.33 seconds. Teresa Morano (2:39.20) and Mei Buzzell (6:15.10) had strong performances in the 800m and 1600m respectively.
In the boys section, reigning winter track state champion Cory Barrett had a solid start to the spring season in his quest to set new school records with two state qualifying times. In the 100m, Barrett placed first at 11.23 seconds, just a tenth of a second from the school record. In the 200m, Barrett placed first at 23.20 seconds. Dan Kashulines had a solid run in the 400m dash at 54.65 seconds and third place. Nick Orr also had a strong start to the season with a second place finish in the 800m at 2:20.60 seconds. Riley Henry began his campaign for a 4:25 mile goal this season with a 4:53.97, third place finish.
Dalton Coyne had a blistering 400m time after trying this event for the first time, placing 4th @ 57.84 sec. Coyne also placed 3rd in the 800m at 2:22.50. On the field, Kyle Murray had a very good start to the season with a second place finish in the shot put at 38’4’25”; he also took second in the discus at 97’5” and first place in the javelin at 119’3”.
ConVal hosts Milford today at 4 p.m.
∎ The New England Ravens 11U team pulled off quite a feat on Sunday, as hurler Patrick Forbes took the mound and threw a no-hitter against the Dirt Devils of Nashua. Forbes threw a 74-pitch complete game with 12 strikeouts as the Ravens took a 4-0 victory. The team then played the second half of their double-header against the Devils, defeating them to jump to 4-0 on the season, good for tops in NEAAU 11U Division V play.
