Remember to love your soldier

To the editor:

The front page of the June 24, 2014, Ledger Transcript really made my heart sink. Lance Corporal Garabrant stood for everything that makes a person want to serve their country. I was extremely proud when my son and four other members of the Conant Baseball Team, Class of 2005, enlisted in the military.

That pride was questioned the day I drove him to the airport to serve his first tour in Iraq. My beautiful, blue-eyed baby boy was going to a foreign land where people would want to kill him.

What kind of father was I? He has since served three tours in the Middle East and is presently serving a four-year deployment in England. I let my guard down thinking England was about as safe as it gets. He called me at my office one day to tell me how much he loved me. I knew immediately that something was wrong. There had been a terrible helicopter accident in his squadron and all of the crew members had died. He could have easily been in that chopper.

We all know freedom isn’t free. Make sure you take the time to thank the families that pay the price.
