Chalke blasts three home runs in Conant win
Conant sophomore Ivy Chalke had a season-opener to remember.
The Orioles’ first baseman blasted three home runs and drove in eight runs total as Conant cruised to an 18-0 five-inning victory over Fall Mountain on Tuesday.
After hitting a solo shot in the first inning, Chalke connected for a grand slam in the second and then capped her day with a three-run blast in the fifth.
“She was just all over it,” said coach Tom Lambert. “Even the one where she flew out to left field was to the fence.”
Freshman Sierra Landry also hit a three-run home run as part of an eight-run second inning.
The offensive explosion overshadowed the return of senior pitcher Kelsey Smith. Smith, who was making her first appearance since the 2011 Division III quarterfinals after missing all of last year with a torn left ACL, dominated in her return to the team.
Smith struck out 11 Wildcats and allowed just one hit, a second-inning double, with one walk and a hit batter.
“It’s nice to have her back,” said Lambert.
After taking a 10-0 lead after the second, Conant added three in the third, two in the second and another three in the fifth.
And Chalke was not the only Oriole to have a big day at the plate.
Junior Hannah Buckjune went 4-for-4 with a double that one-hoped the fence. Junior Heather Bilodeau had three hits, including a shot off the fence, and junior Jenna Sirois also had three hits.
“It’s only one game, but hopefully they swing the bats well throughout the season,” said Lambert.
Conant, who played at Monadnock on Wednesday, will travel to Hopkinton on Friday before Monday’s trip to Mascenic.
