Mascenic senior Jocelyn Ojala had never won a varsity basketball game.

Classmate Erin Scollans could say the same thing, as could juniors Elizabeth Martel, Cheyanne Sauvola and Sarah Sharp.

And they are not the only ones. If you went down the Mascenic varsity roster, not one player could claim they had won a varsity high school basketball game.

But that all changed Friday night with a 41-34 victory over Hillsboro-Deering. With the win, the Vikings snapped a 94-game losing streak that spanned back to the 2006-07 season.

“I think we just shocked New Hampshire,” said coach Wiley Billings. “I know we shocked Division III. We haven’t won a game in six years.”

The last win for the Mascenic program came on Feb. 10, 2007 when the Vikings earned a 49-43 win over Farmington. That came in the 16th game of the season, one that ended with just a 3-15 record. Since then, the only number that would appear in the win column is a zero. The following season finished at 0-18, as did the next two. In 2010-11, the Vikings lost all 17 of their games and last year would be another 0-18 finish. And to start this year, the Vikings lost three straight, including a one-point defeat when they had a shot at the buzzer for the win.

“I did not want to go out never having won a basketball game in four years of high school,” said Ojala.

Over the last six seasons, Mascenic has used five different coaches and Billings is the fourth one in as many years. But what Billings got the players to do was buy into his philosophy. He told them they were not going to be the doormats of Division III anymore. This year was going to be different.

Outside of the 45-point loss in the season opener at Campbell, it really has been a revitalized team. They lost by one to Monadnock and led undefeated Conant at the half. That is more success than a Mascenic team has had in almost six years.

“We were getting closer. We had a few close calls last year,” said Scollans. “But we’ve never been in the situation where it’s been that close. We had to learn what to do.”

So it was really only a matter of time before they broke through and put that first notch in the win column. Hillsboro-Deering came into the game with a pair of wins, but had similar scoring output to what the Vikings had been doing in the early stages of the season. It looked to be a match-up that Mascenic could win.

“We came out with the attitude that we were at least going to play a tough game,” said Scollans. “We knew the win wasn’t going to come easy.”

And what really fueled the victory was the team’s play on the defensive end. Mascenic isn’t a team that is going to score a ton of points so they have to play stingy defense. The Vikings had held two of its three opponents to 37 points or fewer and knew they were capable of doing the same against the Hillcats.

“We’re playing great defense and the girls are feeding off it,” said Billings. “They know they’ve got to play good defense to get the offense going.”

Despite only scoring seven points in the third quarter, the Vikings were able to maintain the lead they built up in the first quarter. It was 32-26 with eight minutes to play and the excitement on and off the court could be felt.

Martel’s full court lay-up made it an eight-point lead. Ojala did the same thing almost a minute later, but the Hillcats were not going away quietly. They were matching the Vikings basket for basket. It was just a difference of five with 3:27 left, the closest Hillsboro-Deering had been since the half, but Mascenic was not about to let this one slip away.

“Now our team knows what it’s like to win and what we have to do to win,” said Ojala. “I think we can build off this. Hopefully it’s the first of many wins. Getting the first win is the hardest.”

With timely baskets, tough defense and most importantly, ball security, the Vikings were able to kill the clock for the program’s first win in almost six years.

“It was unbelievable,” said Billings. “I’m just happy for the girls. They are doing all the little things winners do.”

Mascenic held a 12-8 edge going into the second and were up by as many as nine in the quarter. The leading was just four at the half, but Mascenic extended it advantage to 10 in the third, but then had to deal with the loss of Scollans, who picked up her fifth foul with 1:59 left in the quarter.

“It was scary when we lost her cause she’s a big part of our offense and she gets pretty much all of our rebounds,” said Ojala.

The scoring was balanced on the night, as the starting five accounted for all 41 points. Sharp led the way with 11. Sauvola and Ojala scored nine apiece, Scollans finished with seven and Martel chipped in five.

The Vikings host Campbell tonight.
