It doesn’t look all that hard.

You grab a small ball, place it against the side of your neck and throw.

Simple, right?

No, not simple at all. I wish it was. That would have made my experience on Tuesday a little more rewarding and a lot less embarrassing.

I tried the shot put last spring at Conant, but just for a couple throws and with only a few brief instructions.

This was different.

Most of the times when I do these sorts of challenges, I am most definitely the underdog. This time, there was no chance I could win. And I mean no chance.

Going up against the top two shot put throwers in Division II in ConVal senior Tom Hughes and junior Coty Cadorett presents a huge disadvantage. Not only because they are among the best in the state, but that they have been doing it for years.

This is not the kind of thing you pick up in afternoon. It takes time to develop the mechanics. It is a lot more than picking up a ball and throwing it as far as you can. Mostly, because you are not really throwing it at all. It is more of a push using leverage created by the movements of your legs and upper body.

Hughes just broke his own school record on his way to the Division II title on Feb. 3 with a toss of 48 feet, .75 inches. Cadorett threw for a career best 45 feet, 11.25 inches to finish runner-up. And in practice, both had been surpassing those totals on a consistent basis.

While I had no preconceived notion that I could pull off an upset or even hold my own, I did want to have a respectable showing.

So much for that.

The challenge was run in similar fashion to a meet. Each thrower got a chance to warm-up with four official throws to follow.

With the renovations to the ConVal gymnasium, Hughes, Cadorett and long-time throwing coach Jim Aborn have been using the warehouse rented by the school off Vose Farm Rd.

While many of my previous challenges have included other team members not participating, this was just the four of us. And it really gave me a glimpse into what a practice is like for the only two male throwers on the indoor track team.

After my brief lesson and a few practice throws, Cadorett went first, followed by Hughes and then myself. Cadorett threw for 39 feet, six inches, while Hughes faulted. I came in with a lackluster toss of 24 feet, four inches, but I was in second place after the first round. Too bad it didn’t last.

Cadorett reached 40 feet, one inch, his best of the afternoon, while Hughes essentially ended the competition by throwing for 48 feet. I never got past my first distance and only got to 24 feet one more time.

It was good to see how these two prepare and how much work goes into something that looks so simple.

And on Saturday, the ConVal pair will look to finish off the season with the best throws of the season at the New England Championships.
