Three heading to New England Indoor Championships

Only the top six competitors in each event from New Hampshire qualify for the New England Indoor Track & Field Championships.

And three athletes from ConVal and Conant earned the right to travel to the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury, Mass. on Saturday for the final meet of the season.

Conant senior Katie Tonyai will participate in both the girls 55-meter dash and the 300 meters. ConVal senior Tom Hughes and junior Coty Cadorett will take part in the boys shot put.

Tonyai won the 55-meter dash at the Division II Championships held on Feb. 3 at Dartmouth College. Tonyai, who was ranked No. 1 entering the meet, finished with a time of 7.39 seconds, which was good enough for a .03 second win. It was her sixth overall win in the event this season.

Tonyai also placed second in the 300 meters, the same place she was seeded, with a season best time of 41.86 seconds.

She is ranked second out of NH participants in the 55 and 16th in New England. Tonyai is fourth from NH in the 300 and seeded 19th overall.

Last year, Tonyai finished 17th in New England in the 300 meters and 23rd in the 55-meter dash.

Hughes is also coming off a win at the Division II Championships. Hughes, who was the top ranked shot put thrower in D-II, threw for a school record 48 feet, .75 inches at the D-II meet, breaking his existing mark by over 10 inches and winning the event by more than two feet.

Hughes was fifth last year at the Division II meet. He enters Saturday’s New England Championships ranked third from New Hampshire and 22nd overall in New England.

Cadorett threw for a career best 45 feet and 11.25 inches at the D-II Championships to finish second overall behind Hughes. Cadorett improved by seven spots from ninth in 2012. He is ranked fourth out of the six NH entries and 28th in New England.

The New England Championships will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the field events and the running events start at 11 a.m.
