LeVert single gives WLC win
Warriors get past Mascenic with walk-off
The Wilton-Lyndeborough softball team picked up its fourth straight win on Friday, defeating Mascenic 5-4.
Junior Sophie LeVert singled with one out in the seventh to give the Warriors their first walk-off win since last year’s Division IV championship game.
“It could have gone either way,” said WLC coach Dennis Claire.
For the Vikings, the loss came one day after defeating Hillsboro-Deering 5-4 with a walk-off hit in the eighth.
WLC struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, but Mascenic answered with three in the second and two scoring on sophomore Emily Rines’ double.
The Warriors scored another in the third and if not for a shoestring catch by Mascenic center fielder Erin Scollans with two runners in scoring position, it could have been more. Senior Andrea Heck’s home run in the fifth tied the game at three.
Rines knocked in her third run of the game with a single in the top of the sixth for a 4-3 advantage, only to have WLC counter with one in the last of the inning on Jenna Bragdon’s RBI single.
“The girls played pretty well,” said Mascenic coach Frank Cadwell. “They got a couple very timely hits and that was the difference.”
Mascenic loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but a double play ended the threat. Senior Deanna Davidson doubled to lead off the seventh and scored the winning run.
Mascenic senior Katelynn Kelleher issued no walks and struck out one in the loss, while Davidson had eight strikeouts and six walks.
Mascenic hosts Fall Mountain on Friday, while WLC returns to action Monday at Newmarket.
