Jaffrey Post 11 keeps playoff hopes alive
The Jaffrey Post 11 Legion baseball team kept its playoff hopes alive with a pair of wins to end last week.
Entering play today, Post 11 stood at 7-4 overall with four games to play and was percentage points ahead of Bedford for second place in District B, while Bedford was 8-5 with two games remaining.
The top two teams in District B advance to the Junior Legion tournament, which takes the top two teams from the four districts and begins on Aug. 2.
With a 6-5 win over Bedford on Saturday, Jaffrey moved into sole possession of second place. Jaffrey had dropped the first two meetings with Bedford this summer, but rallied to win the back and forth contest on Saturday.
Bedford took an early 3-0 lead, but Jaffrey scored two in the third on Jesse LeBlanc’s two-run base hit and added another two in the fourth for a 4-3 lead.
Bedford scored one in the fifth to tie the game before Post 11 plated two in the seventh and held on for the seventh win of the season.
Shane Rautiola picked up the win in relief for his fourth victory and second in a row after defeating Merrimack 10-3 on Wednesday for a season sweep of Post 98.
Jaffrey scored six in the first and never looked back, adding two more in the fifth and a pair in the sixth.
Matt Cyr was 3-for-4 and scored three times.
Jaffrey hosts Milford tonight at 5 p.m. and travels to Keene on Wednesday. Post 11 wraps up the regular season with a double header against Nashua, the top team in District B, on Saturday. Jaffrey lost the first meeting 2-0.
