What started out as a fun exhibition contest between the Mascenic boys varsity team and the Viking alumni team turned into an intense fight to the finish Friday night. Mascenic center Jimmy Thompson scored on an assist from Jared Stauffeneker with 50 seconds remaining in the game to put the Vikings varsity up 61-59. The alumni got off a couple of three-pointers to no avail before Mikey Martel was fouled with mere seconds on the clock. Much to his chagrin, Martel missed the first and made the second to cut the lead to one. Martel then stole the ball back and heaved a desperation three-quartter-court shot that hit the backboard; alum Curtis Salo made a last-second attempt to tip it in that just rolled off the rim.

Stauffeneker was the game’s high scorer with 30. He was aggressive on offense and defense all night long; in one 10-second sequence at the end of the third quarter, he threw an assist, stole the ensuing inbounds pass and then stepped back to nail a buzzer-beating three. Thompson added 8 points of his own. The leading alumni scorer was Tom Milbert with 14; Martel also scored 13.

The Mascenic boys alumni came out in huge numbers for the event; the team was made up of 20 former players, which led athletic director Kevin Rines to consider putting together multiple alumni teams, grouped by graduating years, for next year’s event. In contrast, the Mascenic girls alumni game was canceled due to a lack of available alumni players.
