There were no injuries in a three-vehicle crash involving a 12-wheel dump truck that shut down Turnpike Road in New Ipswich on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene around 1:49 p.m. Tuesday, after a black Honda Odyssey traveling east on Turnpike Road near the Dollar General came to a stop while making a left turn into a driveway according to New Ipswich Police Lt. Michael Abel. The driver of an eastbound Toyota Sienna van did not notice the Honda had come to a stop, Abel said, and the Sienna hit the Odyssey from behind, sending it into the westbound travel lane, where it collided head-on with a 12-wheel dump truck owned by Mariano Trucking in the westbound lane.

“The driver of the dump truck tried to strafe to the right and avoid it, but there was nowhere to go,” Abel said.

Although there were five people in the Toyota Sienna, three in the Honda Odyssey, and a driver in the dump truck, none were injured or were taken to the hospital.

“I almost can’t believe it. It was very lucky,” Abel said.

Turnpike Road was closed and traffic was detoured through either end of Dark Lane while the vehicles were towed from the scene.
